Enterprise Data Architecture is a combination of standards, policies, processes, and templates that apply to all information-related projects.  There are two phrases used in the construction industry that also apply to Enterprise Data Architecture:

   1. A building is only as sound as its foundation
   2. Use the right tool for the job

The Data Architecture “foundation” of your company includes the infrastructure, organization, and orchestration of your information assets.  This foundation can be laid independently by each project or it could be laid one time for all projects. The price for allowing disjointed foundations by project becomes apparent when heterogeneous systems are integrated together. Even with a published data dictionary, extensive transformations are necessary in the absence of data standards.

Data modeling is both a science and an art. Textbook methodologies provide guidelines that are supplemented by experience and business knowledge. Published standards and best practices, while important, need to also be paired with peer and business reviews to validate that designs meet Enterprise goals.
